Most local businesses lose customers simply because a competitor shows up higher on Google Maps. Over the last few years I have taken businesses in the US, UK and UAE from page-two obscurity to the map pack. Here is the checklist I follow.
1. Fix the Google Business Profile first
- Choose the most accurate primary category and only relevant secondary categories
- Add every service with a short, keyword-focused description
- Complete attributes, hours, service areas and a description that sounds human
- Upload real, geo-relevant photos and post at least weekly
2. Make the website agree with the profile
Google trusts what it can confirm. Every service on your profile should have a matching page on your website, using the same wording and local keywords.
3. NAP consistency and citations
Your name, address and phone number must be identical everywhere. Clean up old listings, then build citations on trusted directories — for one mattress retailer I built 150+.
4. Reviews with a system
Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review using natural service and location keywords.
5. Local authority
Local backlinks, embeds of your map on trusted sites and Google-property stacking all reinforce your entity. They work best on top of the basics above — never instead of them.
6. Measure with a map grid, not one search
Rankings change street by street. A grid scan shows your real visibility across the whole area — that is how I proved an average rank improvement from #20 to #2 for one client.
